A contemporary impressionist painting of a Japanese garden, "Liliu'okalani Park" is a tranquil scene with sunlight and colorful reflections. Located on Banyan Drive in Hilo, Hawaii, this watery garden with giant, old trees is dedicated to Princess Liliu'okalani. The art and the place is so reminiscent of the real Hilo and its long time residents. |

"Liliuokalani"
This is a favorite painting of Karen's at Mo Media. A full size print
now hangs in her office on the Hilo Bay Front along with a handful of
prints by notable Hawaiian Artists.
"Liliuokalani" depicts something of the character of Hilo; the Banyan trees, the Jananese Gardens and the fishing ponds. I painted this on
location with help from an overcast sky. Luckily, some soft shadows
are evident to create light and darks in the painting, but none
enough to distract the viewer from the main ornamental feature of the
garden and the center of interest for my composition. This feature,
highlighted by its own reflection, is so strong that even all the
yellow in this piece doesn't overwhelm it.
Did I mention that Karen's wall where it hangs at Mo Media is yellow? It works!
